Because the perspective in this photo looks upward, I did not need to specifically detail the slopes of the Toroweap Formation and the Hermit Shale. These will be done in Phase 1b along with further work on the upper Supai layers.
For the first step in surface map creation I chose to start on a smaller scale by using my photo shown at far left (click for larger image). This covers the top five geological layers for the Canyon.

Build time = 18 hours

Step 1

Original photograph at right. Results of first steps above.

1) Start Terragen and load Terrain file: grand_canyon_AZ_1025.ter
Match up point of view with original photograph.
[ The accuracy of the terrain is amazing. ]
Adjust sun position to produce same shadows.
Change Clouds to none and Atmosphere settings to match pale blue sky.

Step 2
2) Begin surface mapping of rock layers.
Step 3
3) Develop details on Kaibab and Coconino.
Step 4
4) Begin to develop Vegetation surface map.
Start on Supai Group layering.
Step 5
5) Do a render from a farther point of view (with clouds).
Take a break and admire the initial results.
Step 6
6) Adjust camera POV carefully to match original photo.
More work on surfaces.
Step 7
7) Strengthen Supai layers.
Improve vegetation surface.
Step 8
8) Extensive tweaking to improve all surface details.
Added more Supai bands and more subtle coloration.
