What follows is information that I have gathered from books and web sites on indoor bonsai. My main purpose is to organize this material for myself and hopefully provide something useful to others. I have grouped the plants under three categories. Tropical plants are generally grown in warm conditions year round. These trees are called "tender" because they don't survive freezing. I have also included some sub-tropical species. For those that prefer a cooler period in winter, the temperatures are not outside the range of typical indoor living conditions -- at least where I live in the Upper Midwest -- homes being heated to 65 or 70 degrees. Temperate plants are those hardy or semi-hardy trees that require a dormant period in the winter that is colder than dwelling conditions in a home. Some arrangement needs to be made to provide the colder environment. This group includes both evergreen and deciduous species. I am using the third category, Other plants, for species that are less commonly viewed as subjects for bonsai or that are perhaps more recent additions to this art. I do not mean that these are second rate species; actually I am interested in many of these plants. Most of these are tropical or subtropical in nature. I welcome any comments, corrections, and additions for these web pages. |
